Our volunteers are working to meet the needs of their neighborhoods and the community by advocating for low-income children and adults with autism and other special needs.

In recognition of these outstanding achievements, The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc. is proud to announce the availability of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a prestigious national honor offered in recognition of volunteer commitment. Established in 2003, this new Award is given by the President of the United States and honors individuals, families and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the course of 12 months.

The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc. has teamed with hundreds of organizations and businesses across the country to deliver this Award to our most outstanding volunteers. As a Certifying Organization of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, we can nominate potential recipients and distribute the Award to those who meet or exceed the Award criteria.

“ The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc is extremely proud to join the President of the United States in recognizing the volunteers who consistently take the time to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Tatiana Mendoza president and Founder of The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc. “Volunteers strengthen America and inspire others to get involved. We are proud to honor our volunteers who are answering the call with this Award.”

Children, adults, families and groups can receive the Award and, given their ongoing service activity, many of our volunteers may already meet the requirements. To qualify for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, volunteers simply submit a record of their service hours to The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc., and we will verify the service and deliver the Award.

Volunteer service hours are not limited to those performed on behalf of The MSAAFINC. In fact, service hours can be accumulated through work on a variety of projects throughout the year. The only requirement is that the necessary hours be completed within 12 months; recipients can qualify for a new Award each year.

“Our volunteers should strive to earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award every year,” said Tatiana Mendoza. “Even if you’ve never volunteered before, the Award is within your reach. In fact, the strength and success of our nation depends on every one of us taking an active role in the community where we live. You can also help strengthen America by asking your friends, families and neighbors to join you in helping your community. Most people say ‘yes’ if asked to volunteer – all it takes is a personal request.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation – created by President George W. Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make to our nation. To learn more and find out how to qualify for the Award, contact The MSAAFINC, our Award administrator, at MSAAFinc@gmail.com or visit www.PresidentialServiceAwards.gov.

To be eligible to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award, applicants' service hours must be confirmed by a registered Certifying Organization. There are three levels of the Award varying by hours of service completed within a 12-month period:

Kids - 14 and younger

Bronze Award50 - 74 hours
Silver Award75 - 99 hours
Gold Award100 or more hours

Young Adults - Ages 15 - 25
Bronze Award100 - 174 hours
Silver Award175 - 249 hours
Gold Award250 or more hours

Adults - Ages 26 and up
Bronze Award100 - 249 hours
Silver Award250 - 499 hours
Gold Award500 or more hours

Families and Groups (two or more people)*
Bronze Award200 - 499 hours
Silver Award500 - 999 hours
Gold Award1,000 or more hours
*Each member contributing at least 25 hours towards the total

President’s Call to Service Award
Individuals who have completed 4,000 or more volunteer service hours over the course of their lifetime are eligible to receive the President’s Call to Service Award.

Thank you!

MSAAFinc

Why Me?

AMY LENNARD GOEHNER said it best, "The "typically developing" siblings of autistic children are, in fact, the furthest thing from typical. Often, they are wiser and more mature than their age would suggest. And they have to be, given the myriad challenges they face." .

I wanted to share this poem with you written by a very strong, loving, and much wiser then his years young man. He is Ammanuel Rufael an autism worrier! Having a brother and or sister with autism can also teach you many things. Hope love and understanding.

Ammanuel Rufael

Why Me?

I asked God, “Why me? Why do my brother
and sister have autism?” Going to places is
hard, people starring at you looking at
them like they’re stupid, but they’re not. I
asked my mom why are people starring at us
She said two words, “So What.” One day
she said to me, “Why not us?”
I realized that day how blessed we are.
We swim, we play , we walk, and
we have fun together. In their
eyes they’re in a different world.
I love their world.
They teach me many great things
even though they can’t communicate
as well as others.
They are really smart. They
can solve so many big puzzles,
ride bikes, and can even read.
I love my siblings, I always have
and I hope one day they can talk.

Dear Friends

My name is Tatiana Mendoza I am the CEO and founder of The Mendoza Science and Arts Autism Foundation Inc. Holmes is a self proclaimed marketing nerd and a certified writer who obtained her English Writing Skills certificate at Alison (an online school based in the United Kingdom.)

She writes about autism and the stigma around it. It's hard to take that some people still believe autism is contagious. And how much harm a community that is quick to judge can have on families dealing with autism.

'I don't write for the audience, neither for myself. I am writing because of the world and for the world.' She stated on her website. Click here to Visit Vergielyn website.

"Talk A Little About Autism”
By Vergielyn Cubol Holmes

Autism, some people look at it as a disease not a personality disorder. Obviously autism is not a contagious disease that if one gets near to a person affected by autism they’ll be like them too. That if you touch their hands you'll get the same. Talking about "touching their hands" do you know that it is what they really need from you? Let me just clarify that I am not creating an argument here but stating some facts how I see the majority of us treating people that are affected by autism.

Literally autism is a disorder but not a disease. I consider it myself as a "tiny" disorder that I won’t hesitate to hug and kiss a little child with such condition. Making jokes or creating videos about autism that says there are pros- and cons on the affected children break my heart. Why do people have to be like this? I wonder how they would feel if they are the parents or the ones with such disorder. For sure it will never be easy.

You know some sad facts that I discovered? Some people who claim to be "Christians" or the so called followers of God even mistreat people with autism. Call them names that aren't good to the ears. And I am saying "some" not every Christian, so I am not targeting anyone here, okay?

There are tons of organizations these days that help children with such condition. Basically the majority of them provide financial help for the affected ones. Literally money can help alot to these children but there is more than what money can do. Simply being compassionate is a great help for them. If you have someone in your home who is suffering from such disorder the greatest thing you could give them is your love. Every bit of your compassion is what they need. To understand what they are going though and broaden your patience, and to keep them as part of your world is the greatest thing you can provide them.
And for those individuals out there, I just want to let you know that you don't have to be an Angelina Jolie just to give compassion and do a little humanitarian act , know that little children with this kind of condition need your compassionate hand.

MSAAFinc would like to thank Vergielyn Cubol Holmes for being our guest blogger!

Please follow us on Facebook

Thank you Autism Creations for our Tag! Our hats go off to you!!

Special Education Day began in 2005. That year marked the 30th anniversary of the IDEA--the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Where are we now on providing access to education for all children, including children with disabilities? Do you feel we have come a long way from when President Gerald Ford signed the ground-breaking legislation?

We have come a long way but we still have a long way to go. Our hope is that by following these few helpful tips, families may lessen the stress of the holiday season and make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. The following tips were developed with input from the Autism Society, the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, Easter Seals Crossroads, the Sonya Ansari Center for Autism at Logan and the Indiana Autism Leadership Network..

1. Preparation is crucial for many individuals. At the same time, it is important to determine how much preparation a specific person may need. For example, if your son or daughter has a tendency to become anxious when anticipating an event that is to occur in the future, you may want to adjust how many days in advance you prepare him or her. Preparation can occur in various ways by using a calendar and marking the dates of various holiday events, or by creating a social story that highlights what will happen at a given event.

2. Decorations around the house may be disruptive for some. It may be helpful to revisit pictures from previous holidays that show decorations in the house. If such a photo book does not exist, use this holiday season to create one. For some it may also be helpful to take them shopping with you for holiday decorations so that they are engaged in the process. Or involve them in the process of decorating the house. And once holiday decorations have been put up, you may need to create rules about those that can and cannot be touched. Be direct, specific and consistent.

3. If a person with autism has difficulty with change, you may want to gradually decorate the house. For example, on the first day, put up the Christmas tree, then on the next day, decorate the tree and so on. And again, engage them as much as possible in this process. It may be helpful to develop a visual schedule or calendar that shows what will be done on each day.

4. If a person with autism begins to obsess about a particular gift or item they want, it may be helpful to be specific and direct about the number of times they can mention the gift. One suggestion is to give them five chips. They are allowed to exchange one chip for five minutes of talking about the desired gift. Also, if you have no intention of purchasing a specific item, it serves no purpose to tell them that maybe they will get the gift. This will only lead to problems in the future. Always choose to be direct and specific about your intentions.

5. Teach them how to leave a situation and/or how to access support when an event becomes overwhelming. For example, if you are having visitors, have a space set aside for the child as his/her safe/calm space. The individual should be taught ahead of time that they should go to their space when feeling overwhelmed. This self-management tool will serve the individual into adulthood. For those who are not at that level of self-management, develop a signal or cue for them to show when they are getting anxious, and prompt them to use the space. For individuals with more significant challenges, practice using this space in a calm manner at various times prior to your guests' arrival. Take them into the room and engage them in calming activities (e.g., play soft music, rub his/her back, turn down the lights, etc.). Then when you notice the individual becoming anxious, calmly remove him/her from the anxiety-provoking setting immediately and take him/her into the calming environment.

6. If you are traveling for the holidays, make sure you have their favorite foods, books or toys available. Having familiar items readily available can help to calm stressful situations. Also, prepare them via social stories or other communication systems for any unexpected delays in travel. If you are flying for the first time, it may be helpful to bring the individual to the airport in advance and help him/her to become accustomed to airports and planes. Use social stories and pictures to rehearse what will happen when boarding and flying.

7. Know your loved one with autism and how much noise and activity they can tolerate. If you detect that a situation may be becoming overwhelming, help them find a quiet area in which to regroup. And there may be some situations that you simply avoid (e.g., crowded shopping malls the day after Thanksgiving).

8. Prepare a photo album in advance of the relatives and other guests who will be visiting during the holidays. Allow the person with autism access to these photos at all times and also go through the photo album with him/her while talking briefly about each family member.

9. Practice opening gifts, taking turns and waiting for others, and giving gifts. Role play scenarios with your child in preparation for him/her getting a gift they do not want. Talk through this process to avoid embarrassing moments with family members. You might also choose to practice certain religious rituals. Work with a speech language pathologist to construct pages of vocabulary or topic boards that relate to the holidays and family traditions.

10. Prepare family members for strategies to use to minimize anxiety or behavioral incidents, and to enhance participation. Help them to understand if the person with autism prefers to be hugged or not, needs calm discussions or provide other suggestions that will facilitate a smoother holiday season. If the individual becomes upset, it might also be helpful to coach others to remain calm and neutral in an effort to minimize behavioral outbursts.

11. If the person with autism is on special diet, make sure there is food available that he/she can eat. And even if they are not on a special diet, be cautious of the amount of sugar consumed. And try to maintain a sleep and meal routine.

12. Above all, know your loved one with autism. Know how much noise and other sensory input they can take. Know their level of anxiety and the amount of preparation it may take. Know their fears and those things that will make the season more enjoyable for them.

Don’t stress. Plan in advance. And most of all have a wonderful holiday season!

For more information please visit Autism Society

Thank you Autism Creations for making our neat Tag. If you’d like to adopt a family for Thanksgiving, just email The MSAAFinc at MSAAFinc@gmail.com We will gather needed information and offer you options about the family or families you wish to adopt.

For a family of four: 12 pound turkey Two each of: Canned corn Canned sweet peas Canned cut green beans Canned yams Mac a roni & Cheese Boxed stuffing mix Canned chicken Broth Cans of fruit One each of: Turkey gravy Canned Cranberry Sauce Boxed corn bread mix Boxed instant potatoes
What you decide to do for your adopted family this Thanksgiving is entirely your choice. The suggested list at the right is a general guide for a family of four, but is in no way intended to pre scribe your Thanks giv ing meal choices. Do remember that if you are adopting a family of more than four, you will want to adjust your quantities accordingly.

While many of our sponsors are individuals, many organizations, churches or plantations also call and sponsor any where from 1–5 families. So, either call your self or propose to your Book Club, neighborhood, etc. that you do some thing together.

Last year we fed over 10 families. This year we are expecting more. We need your help! Thanks for participating!

Any donation no matter how small will be of great help!!

Thank you so much!!
MSAAFinc

5th Annual Tools for Transformation Parent and Professional Conference and State of the State Legislative Breakfast

Dear Friends

Happy Autism Awareness Month!! It was a day of education, empowerment and fun! Families had the opportunity of connecting with other parents affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.
It is an amazing feeling to see such a big response by the Canoga Park and Autism community. Without our sponsors, this event wouldn’t be possible. A big thank you to them!

Sponsored by

AmaliaStarrSpeakerAutism.com website.
800-939-1046
Amaliastarr.Autisable.com
autismmomexpert twitter

DJs4Autismtwitter

It really speaks volumes on the Autism community that we can gather around a common cause and help less fortunate families with Autism during the holidays. 36 children and adults with Autism received gifts!! Try not to get attached to those feelings, don’t numb them out, and don’t bury them. They will shift over time. Remember, it is a process. We are all different, but I have found that surrendering to “what is” helps one to move through this stage more quickly, as resistance to “what is” will only prolong it. When you are able to face the diagnosis head on the negative feelings will begin to fade away, and acceptance is right around the corner.

 Gather as much information as possible.
 Join support groups.
 Talk about your child’s disability.
 Keep a journal, and write down anything and everything.
 Find one person you can share your innermost feelings with.
 When you are ready talk to other parents. They can be a great source of information and support.
 Try to live and stay in the moment as often as you can.
 Be courageous, and believe in yourself.

My son, Brandon was diagnosed with epilepsy and learning disorders at age nine. The pediatric neurologist told us to tell no one including Brandon that he had epilepsy, due to the stigma attached. For several years I did what she said. That was one of the worst things I could have done.

 Don’t keep secrets, especially about a health condition. It causes more harm than good.

I know from personal experience that when our children are helped at an early age, they have a much better chance of changing negative behaviors, improving performance, increasing self-acceptance, and self-esteem. However, if you missed that opportunity as I did with Brandon, don’t give up. We didn’t find out Brandon had Asperger’s until he was thirty-two years old. Early intervention is key, but I know firsthand it’s never too late to get help.

2) What do you wish someone would have told you about having a child with special needs?

 Don’t take it personally.
 It is not your fault.
 The sooner you give up resistance the sooner you can help your child.
 Trust yourself.
 If traditional treatment isn’t working look into alternatives.
 Doctors are not always right.
 Find a physician you like, and one who understands your situation.
 Acceptance comes only when you are ready.
 Be kind to yourself.
 Get as much help, assistance and support from people who care, as often as possible.
 Hold onto HOPE and never let it go.

3) What do you consider to be the most important milestone for a parent?

The most important milestones for me came when I was able to recognize and appreciate the small things Brandon was able to accomplish. Once I added them all together they were no longer small, they were grand. That is the beauty with our special needs kids they are all different and very special. Focus on what your child can do not on what he/she can’t do.

4) How did you reach that milestone?

I gave up trying to change my son, because I realized that I was the one who needed to change. I changed my perspective. I was then able to accept Brandon for exactly who he was. That shifted everything. I no longer tried to fix my son, because he wasn’t broken. I began to understand his thinking patterns, and his unique way of doing things, and I discovered what a beautiful person he was. I then gave up my expectations and Brandon began to develop and mature in ways I never thought possible. ACCEPTANCE is the answer.

5) How has having a Child with Asperger’s changed your point of view about the world?

I learned we don’t have to become victims. We are all individuals, and we are responsible for our own actions and wellbeing. We have many options and choices. I believe we have the ability to create our own happiness, and our own destiny. There are many ways to get to the top of the mountain. It is up to us, the parents, to help our special needs children carve out their own special path.

6) How can the community better help people with autism?

We need to educate our communities by helping them to be well informed. Information and knowledge can be powerful, and can help people to better understand our children and adults with autism and special needs. I hope and pray that one day we will be able to live in harmony and learn to appreciate, and even celebrate our differences.

7) What can we all do to reach that goal?

We can all be more conscious evolved human beings. Work on ourselves to be the best we can be. When we do that we are not only helping ourselves we are also helping our children, and all the people around us.

8) What made you write Raising Brandon?

I initially wrote Raising Brandon to help me work through my unwanted feelings, of sadness, anger, and disappointment. Writing was a great way to release my negative thoughts and feelings. It took nearly twelve years to write the book, because Brandon and I had to grow into the story and begin to live it. Once Brandon had twelve years of living independently under his belt I felt we had a story of great value and worth sharing. Raising Brandon is filled with answers and solutions I wished I had when Brandon was growing up.

9) How has "Raising Brandon" changed your life?

Raising Brandon has opened the doors for me to live my dream as a motivational speaker. I give presentations, workshops, seminars, and private consultations. I have met some of the most wonderful people, including parents, family members, health professionals, and educators. These people truly care and want to make this world a better place. I am proud to be included in this arena. I love helping others, and I love what I do.

As parents, we can never give up. We hold the key to our children’s future. My son, Brandon is living proof that anything is possible.

I encourage you to contact her so you can learn more about all she does!

AmaliaStarrSpeakerAutism.com website.
800-939-1046
Amaliastarr.Autisable.com
autismmomexpert twitter

The MSAAFinc would like to thank Amalia Starr for her time and love!

"Winter Wonderland” toy drive and annual Autism information fair!

“Winter Wonderland” toy and food drive and annual Autism Winter information fair!

Please feel free to bring any donations of food (non perishable items) and toys!

Thank YOU!!

" The MSAAFinc is a non- profit organization that offers a forum for families of children, teens and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. To find love and support!"

This is intended on being a day of education, empowerment and fun! Ideally we would all be transitioning together along the way. How can we help our children grow and develop, if we aren’t growing and changing ourselves?

As we raise our children, especially, children with special needs we must be the best we can be. As parents, we lead the way and we hold the key to our children’s future. As we continue to transition, we become more evolved human beings in the process, and the healthier we are emotionally the more we have to give. The better we feel about ourselves the more we can help our children. When we parent this way the entire family wins.

My thirty-six year old son, Brandon has Asperger’s, untreatable epilepsy, and severe learning disorders. He has achieved what professionals believed to be impossible: he has been living on his own for the past twelve years, enjoying his independence.

Independence is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Although living alone may not be an option for every child, helping one’s child to live the best life possible is every parent’s dream.

Independence comes in all shapes and sizes. Our children are transitioning all the time. We may not notice it unless we stay focused on the small, tiny things our children can do. Try not to compare your children with others. Praise them for what they do. Focus on seeing the positive instead of the negative.

Find ways to take time out for yourself, and bring laughter and joy into your life. As parents, we set the tone within the family unit. We must get help, assistance, and support from people who care and understand our children. We don’t need to do this alone. There are people who truly want to help. Welcome them in, and allow them to assist and support you. The better you take care of yourself, the more you have to give, and help your children reach their full potential.

I encourage you to contact her so you can learn more about all she does!
AmaliaStarrSpeakerAutism website.
800-939-1046
Amaliastarr.Autisable
autismmomexpert twitter

The MSAAFinc would like to thank Amalia Starr for her time and love!
Please stay tuned for our Q&A with Amalia Starr coming up later this month!

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

Dear Frineds
PLEASE DONATE THANKSGIVING BASKETS

The entire community is encouraged to participate in the annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive. This is the questions many teens or just siblings in general ask when they find out that their sister or brother has autism. Or a better question is, “what is autism?” Many times we are lost when we find out our siblings are autistic. We don’t know what it or why it is happening but really the answers are clear, we just need to open our eyes to them.
Autism does not have to be this monster that other people make it out to be; it is a hidden gift. Right away we think of it as bad but really we need to see that it is a gift right from God that He is giving us to use to change the world. So many times people search and devote their time to finding out what they are destined to do and here us sibling are with it practically given to us. We can change the world with autism. We can do so many different things. It teaches us discipline, patience, and maturity; three things we need to be successful. We can use it to become an advocate or we can use it to change the way we think. For me, I always had a negative take on things and when I stopped looking at the bad in autism, I started looking at the good in everything else. I saw the potential in my brother and it helped me to find my voice and helped me find out how to help my brother. It has also opened my eyes so much to see everything else around me and it helped me find out what needed to be done in order to make this world a better place for my brother. So I say, don’t look at the bad but at the good! Look it as a special gift and always remember to be there for your siblings. Accept them and help others accept them too. Always remember that it is a gift not a cure; you are not be punished!

Zack Gonzalez

Author of Saving Deets!: A Family's Journey with Autism

Host of "it's on with Zack" (blogtalkradio.com/itsonwithzack)

Advocate for Autism

Play Now for Autism Executive Chair

playnow4autism@gmail.com

Stay Connected with Zack. Tara McClintick

I had the privilege of interviewing an author, poet, teacher, loving wife, mother and outstanding resource for parents, teachers, and the community. Her name is Tara McClintick and I encourage you to visit The Books by Tara website. She took time from her day to answer questions, including our question of the week,
"What do you think is the #1 problem facing the Autism Spectrum Disorders community?" I will post the results of our poll next week, so please vote.

So it's my pleasure to introduce to you Tara McClintick!

MSAAF- What do you think is the #1 problem facing the ASD community?

Tara- One lack of good resources- trained people, finances to afford the programs that there are, and knowledgeable health providers, etc. By "Good" I mean qualified and effective.

MSAAF- And what do you think the community as a whole can do to help?

Tara- There are many ways the community as a whole can help if they are more aware of the issues...I'll list a few.

MASSF- Thank you!

Tara- One: Realize we are all in this together. 1 in 100 kids, these kids are the future. The condition of autism has a lot to teach us all. Two: Educate themselves through books and talking to families living with autism. No excuse with the Internet, we're everywhere now. Mainstream media is shaped by the funding. We have to start thinking of people and health.
Read, learn like we parents are doing. Besides, autism is in good company. The "incurable"
conditions abound, it's a matter of daily choices and taking responsibility!

MSAAF- We need to find ways to share our aspirations, ambitions, and goals for our loved ones with ASD...with our community.

Tara- Because kids with autism can be helped, but they require an enormous amount of support. We all can pay now or later...If we don't support the kids' develpment, and they are dependent their whole lives, that's a lot of kids society will be supporting. Three: Reach out any way they are comfortable. [Spend] time with kids, financially, politically...ask families what they need.

MSAAF- What we all get by means of TV, we should use like a hand in the dark; with a bit of light we should drop the hand. That's why I started The MSAAF Inc, to find help for people, by people who have been there.

Tara- I agree... Thank You! What about you, are you finding the same obstacles across the
country from me? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

MSAAF- Yes, we are. I have talked to people who don't have a loved one with autism. [They] tell me about a false sense of involvement that they get from some companies...they don't feel it's real (autism), they don't feel like our loved ones are real...It's sad.

Tara- You have my full support, shoot your ideas at me any time. I'll do my best to help. Our kids have things to say to the world.

MSAAF- Thank you for your support. I don't know what would be best, I don't think we will know till we try! But I do know that we will never stop looking! We need to keep hope in our minds and love in our souls.

Tara- Definitely , I am all about trying. Trying is more important than succeeding; because if we don't try, we won't succeed!

Thank you so much for doing this interview for The MSAAF Inc.

You gave the gift of community Thank You!

Hello,
I just wanted to say thank you to all our sponsors on behalf of The MSAAF families who participated in our first ever Summer Time PoGo party!
